Verisign and C2Net Deliver 128-bit Encryption to Protect Website Transactions Worldwide

Department of Commerce Approval Makes 128-bit Web site Digital Certificates Immediately Available for Stronghold Apache Web Servers

June 2, 1999 02:37 PM
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- VeriSign, Inc. VRSN , the world's leading provider of Internet Trust Services, and C2Net Software, Inc. today announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce has approved the eligibility of Stronghold Apache servers using a VeriSign Global Server ID to deliver 128-bit encryption when connecting with browsers worldwide. VeriSign's Global Server IDs for Apache customers are available today from VeriSign's Web site. In related news, the Department of Commerce has also approved VeriSign's eligibility to issue 128-bit certificates to customers in a wider range of countries, including the Peoples Republic of China, Mexico and Taiwan.
"C2Net is committed to providing our customers with unparalleled security for global communications and commerce," said Bill Rowzee, CEO of C2Net Software. "According to Netcraft, Stronghold is the number one Unix 128-bit commercial secure server available today. We look forward to continuing our work with VeriSign -- our preferred provider for digital certificates -- to enable our customers with the strongest encryption available."

A VeriSign Global Server ID enables a Web server to establish 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) sessions with the export versions of Web browsers from Microsoft and Netscape as well as applications such as Microsoft Money. Normally, these browsers -- in widespread use both domestically and abroad -- are only capable of establishing 40-bit SSL sessions when communicating with a Web server. A VeriSign Global Server ID enables these browsers to establish 128-bit encrypted SSL sessions which, according to RSA Data Security, would take a trillion-trillion years to break using today's most sophisticated hacking techniques. VeriSign is the only digital certificate provider to be granted an exception by the U.S. federal government to issue 128-bit server digital certificates and the only company with 128-bit certificate technology pre-installed into Microsoft and Netscape Web browsers.

"As C2Net's preferred provider of digital certificate services, we're pleased to provide Stronghold Apache customers with the ability to protect financial, healthcare and other sensitive transactions using the strongest encryption available," said Richard Yanowitch, executive vice president of VeriSign. "Our expanded license from the Commerce Department now enables more customers in more countries to secure their applications using this state-of-the-art technology."

Pricing and Availability

VeriSign Global Server IDs are supported by the latest release of C2Net Stronghold Server, version 2.4.2, with no special software required. They are available immediately at www.verisign.com/server/prod/index.html. The Global Server ID is part of VeriSign's family of Global Site Services, which provide customers with a comprehensive solution for Web site security and quality-of-service management. VeriSign's Global Site Services start at $895 and include warranty coverage from $100K-$250K, a 2-day delivery guarantee, significant discounts on Web security training and a 30-day Web site performance measurement service provided by Keynote Systems.

As a special offer, VeriSign is offering free copies of two recently-published books, "Digital Certificates" and "Linux for Apache" to Stronghold customers purchasing a Global Server ID prior to August 1, 1999.
