RedHerring covers how CMGI's @Ventures has been outflanking the Sand Hill Road venture capital firms. Currently @Ventures receives over 1000 business plans a month and has 46 investments across 3 funds.

Mr. Mills would not admit that his firm incubates companies in order to outflank its competition, but @Ventures has had a number of successes nursing neophyte startups. Although @Ventures funded Lycos when it had only one employee, Mr. Mills is most proud of Geocities (Nasdaq: GCTY ), which @Ventures backed when it had the unlikely name of Beverly Hills Internet. Mr. Mills said he threw the business plan on the stack and didn't look at it until Chairman and Founder David Bohnett called him up and gave him the 30-second pitch. According to Mr. Mills, Beverly Hills Internet had been turned down by 100 venture firms before @Ventures decided to stake it. Geocities is now worth over $3 billion. - RedHerring

Brian -- You may be right. Though I wonder whether it is better to go ahead and swallow the 1/4 pt now and take the itch out of the Fed's trigger finger or go on through the next quarter with the threat of an increase still hanging over us.
