From another thread, if you can stand it: Nothing can come from nothing. Therefore, either the universe is of infinite duration, or something originated it. The Big Bang Theory points to a discrete moment when the universe began existence. Therefore, something had to exist prior. But that which has eternal existence outside of time and space we call "God"...Since the universe has a discrete beginning, it could not have been an eternal emanation of God, but is more analogous to an act of creation. Since God is outside of time and space, He must have created the matrix of temporal- spatial rules that govern the development of the origin. Therefore, God is intelligent and acts intentionally. But since it is difficult to see what a Being who by nature exists outside of time and space could lack, the most reasonable attribution of motivation is self- expressive: therefore, to manifest his glory... ...if the discrete act that created the universe is analogous to an act of will, and if the construction of a matrix of time and space with definite properties implies something analogous to intelligence, it is reasonable to extrapolate some overall intentionality to the design of things, and therefore a kind of concern. Is it minute? Supposing that God is, in relation to His creation, all- knowing and all- powerful, it then depends on whether or not He is also morally engaged. At this point, let us just say that if morality is a "deep intention" of God, it is likely that He is involved in our affairs... ..."Manifesting glory" is not the same thing as "just showing off". He has no one to impress. We are in search of a (necessarily limited) analogy to human motivation. It is more like being so filled with "high spirits" that one wants to break out in song!
