M-Systems Following Deal with
WebTV: 1999 Crucial for
Converter Market

By Ronny Lifschitz

WebTV announced yesterday the
introduction of a new-generation television
converter, which is scheduled to be
released on the market this summer.
Parallel to watching cable TV, the converter
will also make it possible to surf on the
Internet, send and receive e-mail, shop on
the Internet, and even print files. The
television converter market is one of the
growing markets in the Internet access
accessories sector, which M-Systems
defined this year as its major target market.

Dataquest estimates that the number of
converter units with Internet-link capability
will reach 1.6 million in 1999. IDC, on the
other hand, predicts that the market will total
30 million units by 2002.

M-Systems believes that the big advantage
of its deal with WebTV lies in the future.
M-Systems' storage product is Microsoft
Windows CE adjusted, and any move that
turns Windows CE into a de facto standard
in the Internet access sector will also
enhance M-Systems' prospects.
