FYI: Philly exchange urges trading delay

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The chairman of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange urged Security and Exchange Commission Chairman Arthur Levitt Wednesday to delay plans for extended stock trading hours that would put massive demands on exchanges. The National Association of Securities Dealers, which governs Nasdaq, approved a plan last week to extend trading hours from the current 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time schedule, with a second session that would likely start at 5:30 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. or later. The board of the New York Stock Exchange is expected to consider a proposal Thursday to extend trading hours starting in July as the traditional markets try to respond to rising competition from overseas exchanges and alternative computer-based exchanges.
