Repost from Yahoo C-Cube Board from a new report available from Indight (sic ? Insight) Research (for $3495 )...

"MPEG-2, a digital video compression technology that shaves transmission bandwidth in TV set-top boxes, satellite set-top boxes, DVD players, camcorders, and PCs, is set to grow at more than 50% annually, says a new report by Insight Research.
Global sales of devices that utilize MPEG-2 encoders and decoders will reach $23.9 billion this year and top $125 billion in 2003.
... the convergence of communications, information, and entertainment is driving the need for MPEG-2. MPEG-2 will be essential to the success of next-generation digital video services and equipment, allowing content and devices from multiple vendors to interact. All of the industries considering digital video service distribution have to make MPEG-2 part of the planning process...
...while global revenue for MPEG-2 encoding and decoding products will grow 51.5 percent annually through 2003, select segments, such as decoders for HDTV and set-top boxes, will nearly double year over year...
...out research leaves little doubt that consumer demand for video products relying on MPEG-2 is accelerating...the success of digital video as part of a broadband bundle will ultimately depend on the ability of the service providers to deliver services economically on an end-to-end basis..."
