They own the Internet's highway systems. As the ISP traffic continues its growth which is something like doubling every 3 or 4 months the companies who will reap the rewards of this greater bandwidth utilization are companies like MCI, Sprint, and AT&T.

This is on top of their efforts to penetrate the local markets.

As of right now, MCI owns most of the Network Access Points on the Internet. NAPs are the exchange points between ISPs and other networks. Of course, MCI owns a lot of Internet backbone also. AT&T on the other hand, is trying to build up its Internet presents. But what is the most interesting is that AT&T will be trying to offer broadband services over cable. If AT&T succeeds, it will be a one stop shop for its customers. Something that the baby bells are hoping to do some day.
