Telecom Leaders Develop First Global Solution Enabling Management of Multi- Vendor Sonet and SDH Networks

LISLE, Ill., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Fujitsu Network Communications, Lucent
Technologies, Nortel Networks, Siemens AG, Tellabs, Inc., and Telcordia
Technologies today announced the agreement on a specification for a software
interface that will, for the first time, enable end-to-end management of
multi-vendor SONET and SDH networks. The parties have made the specification
freely available to the public and are contributing the specification to
various industry standards bodies and forums. A copy of the specification can
be obtained at atis.org , contribution number SIF-GN-9802-011 R3.

These leading telecom solutions providers recognized the need for a global
standard interface that service providers can utilize to deliver a broadened
set of services in a timely, reliable and cost-efficient manner. As mergers,
acquisitions and joint ventures become more and more prevalent, the complexity
of managing these disparate networks composed of heterogeneous, multi-vendor,
multi-technology equipment increases. A standard has been developed by the
telecom leaders that provides a key competitive advantage, especially for
global service providers that require a universal solution that will enable
them to manage their networks worldwide.

"Global service providers need solutions that are open," said Kirk
Shrewsbury, principal network management architect at MCI WorldCom. "Standard
and vendor-independent, solutions that they can apply to their networks
globally, not point solutions with geographical limitations. MCI WorldCom
views this cooperative effort from the leading telecom vendors as necessary
and integral in addressing these needs."

The joint solution specified by the vendors is a CORBA-based interface
between network management systems (NMSs) and element management systems
(EMSs). The interface provides a scaleable, non-proprietary solution that
will enable multi-vendor management systems to interoperate in an open
architecture environment. As a result, service providers can select best in
class SONET and SDH equipment from various vendors, deploy it internationally,
and still be able to manage their network from a single integrated management
system. The interface solution will allow service providers to provision
their networks, activate services, collect faults and manage their network
from a single integrated network management platform.

"Carriers all want open interfaces so they are not dependent on
proprietary or single interface types," said Kenneth Kelly, senior analyst at
the Gartner Group. "Open architecture solutions are what carriers and
suppliers are looking for," he added.

The collaborative work will be used within the TeleManagement Forum, (TM
Forum), an internationally recognized open forum, with over 250 members
globally, dedicated to solving management problems within the communications
industry. TM Forum's SONET/SDH Information Modeling and Implementation Teams
comprised of service provider, equipment, and software vendor members will
evaluate the contribution and adopt it in its ongoing work to specify a
standard NMS-EMS Interface as well as implementing and validating the
interface. The team is scheduled to publish a standard specification by
September 1999.

"TeleManagement Forum takes a very pragmatic approach. Specifications
developed by its members must go through a proof-of-concept implementation
before they are considered for approval," said Elizabeth Adams, President and
CEO of the TeleManagement Forum. "This process is designed to ensure that
specifications are validated for feasibility and 'fit for purpose' during
their development. The TM Forum advocates real world solutions that meet the
needs of today's global communications industry.""

The interface specification is gaining acceptance due to its expanded
capabilities, scalability and openness among service providers and vendors
alike. The recent support of Telcordia and Siemens AG is evidence of the
increased acceptance of the interface solution. It is anticipated that
individual company product announcements and service provider deployments are
to be released in the near future.

"Extant will always use leading edge thinking to bring better service options to our customers,"
"The reasons we chose to work with Tellium are very basic, they know a lot about optical networking and they are the only company that has a
product we can actually see and test,"
