Ericsson completes Qualcomm division purchase Ericsson has concluded its purchase of Qualcomm's terrestrial Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless infrastructure business, including its research and development resources in San Diego, California and Boulder, Colorado in the United States. The transaction, announced in March, also resolves intellectual property disputes globally between the companies relating to CDMA technology.
Ericsson and Qualcomm have agreed to support a single CDMA standard with three optional modes for the next generation of wireless communications. The companies have also entered into cross licensing agreements for their respective patent portfolios and have settled the pending patent infringement litigation between the two companies. Approximately 1,200 Qualcomm employees in the U.S. will be transferred to Ericsson.

Press release Ericsson and 3G in the news Ericsson was mentioned recently in an article in the Far East Economic Review about the telecom situation in South Korea. According to the article, Ericsson's WCDMA technology has an advantage over others because of Ericsson's success with its second-generation GSM technology, the dominant standard around the globe.
The article stated: "'Ericsson is taking over the leadership role because WCDMA is an evolution of GSM,' says Lee Hae Kyoon, a telecoms analyst at Salomon Smith Barney in Seoul."
The article went on to say that Ericsson's purchase of Qualcomm's base-station equipment operation "opens the door for its entry into the American market. 'In the United States, we now have a very strong competitor in Ericsson,' says Chun Kyong Joon, executive vice-president in charge of Samsung Electronics' telecoms research division. Chun says Ericsson can now build its own networks in the U.S. and is expected to market CDMA handsets there for the first time."
