Yes it will be fun to discuss Walmart and Amzn...it'll be a little sloppy in here but i think we'll be ok.

This and many other Internet initiatives are "to be expected" going forward. What will Wal-Mart do with their site that is so different that Gerstner remarks, “wait ‘till you see what Wal-Mart is gearing up to do.”? The article hints that they will leverage their local community stores to target market specific groups with product and consumer information. Key to their strategy will likely be built around the theme "How can we leverage our billions of dollars of investments in stores and distribution?" While Amazon is trying to quickly build the "critical mass" to compete as a vertically integrated retailer (something that runs counter to the naive early assumptions that AMZN could somehow become a huge retailer without all the physical trappings of their competitors), Wal-Mart should be able to leverage their "best of breed" retail investments and experience.

This is one more sign of competition but by no means defines it. The competition that will develop won't necessarily crush Amazon if they don't continue to spend more deeply into debt and stock obligations with questionable acquisitions (ie. Junglee, Planetall). But increasing competition will define a rather mundane future, IMO, in which competition is fierce and profits are slim at best.

It appears Walmart waited until until the web had a decent amount of potential customers. Amazon better focus on competition. Their response was anemic.

Wal-Mart and everyone else are coming and the first mover advantage will not buy you a cup of coffee 10 years from now. Worse yet, for AMZN, Wal-Mart is not exactly a friend. AMZN has a target painted on its back.
