I agree. Either this is a real and regrettable situation or it is a pretty sick joke. Either way, it's not funny.

You are making the presumption that the humorous comments were made in spite of what you perceive to be a potentially legitimate situation. Since we understand the paradigm from which all comments were derived, both the serious and the humorous, why would anyone change their view of others, regardless of the (il)legitimacy of the issue?
