On this issue a physicist and theologean recently won an endowment of 1.2 million to study these very issues, where science and religion come together which apparently centers around the big bang theory these days (thats the conventional wisdom anyway). There is an institute in Berkeley he is granting the money to, I'll try to find it, I didn't know such organizations existed. He made some very convincing arguments on McNeil/Lehrer last friday I think, it was fascinating.

BTW I don't want to go deeply into this subject but my guess is those that object to religion are more passionate about Jesus and the Bible, and the interpretation of those events which were clearly viewed through the eyes of man (and seeminly full of contradictions etc.) because these are things that are "closer to home", so to speak vs. whether the big bang theory is indeed divine or not.
