Agreed. Similarly with colleagues. With some I only have a professional relationship. With some I also have a personal relationship. Maybe there is an easier way to say it, but "friend" isn't really it, either. On SI, I consider anyone I am friendly with to be a friend, but a real friend is someone I can call on when I need a favor, and someone for whom I don't mind doing a favor. Some call it "support group." If the language is capable of making fine distinctions, why shouldn't we use it that way?

How about professional relationships vs relationships? I mean if you say you have a relationship with someone we would all understand it was personal- unless you said "its a professional relationship." So I still don't see why "personal" need be added. It is silly and I still think it makes people sound like ninnies.
