Stew,

The capacities announced for MMC are comparable to SmartMedia. The two products look somewhat alike although SmartMedia is thinner and larger. I believe that MMC is a superior product because of the issue of the controller and the serialization feature that will allow for some form of security for those providing content.

The reason I fear MMC is because it seems to be gaining ground every day while we are sitting here beating the drum and trying to levitate CompactFlash sales. Also we have spent quite a bit of energy discussing royalty revenues from CF on the thread. I want CF to have a nice, long life expectancy, enjoy a protracted period of productivity and profitability for SanDisk shareholders, age gracefully and then go into retirement as its hair turns gray and its joints start to stiffen. MMC has the potential to upstage all of the investment made in developing and promoting CF.

In my Gorilla Game discussion I will be addressing the topic of competing technologies in an upcoming chapter. One of the questions I pose is...

"Can it fit inside a CF slot?"

I believe anything you can slip in a CF slot is a potential threat to CF. Thus my comments earlier today. Rest assured, I am not losing sleep over the matter. But, as Sam stated, there is no time to rest on laurels. I just keep looking over my shoulder thinking I here footsteps.
