I've found the perfect solution to overtrading: get a Dell machine with a V90 modem that won't connect to the ISP (or to AOL, or to ATT for that matter).

Problem may be that the modem is a 3com winmodem. I've heard they can be trouble unless you have a super clear line, which I don't have here in the wilds of Vermont.

The modem on my two year old laptop will connect at 24k, but that's the limit. The Winmodem won't connect at all.

I hope this may be of use to any one thinking of buying a modem in areas where the phone line is suspect.
