DSPC PDC Chipsets Power Lightest Handset in the World; New Kyocera 533G PDC Handset Weighs in
At Less Than 60 Grams -- approx. 2 oz.
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1999--DSP Communications, Inc. (NYSE:DSP)
today announced that its sixth generation PDC chipsets are featured in the world's lightest handset
manufactured by Kyocera Corp. Weighing only 59 grams, the new Digital Minimo 533G handset of IDO
Corp. is now available to consumers in Japan. A similar model is scheduled to be provided to DDI Cellular
Group in the near future.
"The introduction of Kyocera's new IDO 533G handset demonstrates how DSPC is using its baseband
chipset expertise to reduce the weight, size and power consumption of wireless handsets," said Arnon
Kohavi, Senior VP, Strategic Relations for DSPC. "We will continue to provide manufacturers with state of
the art wireless technology enabling our customers to remain leaders in handset design."
"We are very pleased with the performance of DSPC's PDC chipset which enables our handsets to achieve
record talk and standby times, low power consumption and light weight," said Yoshifumi Haga,
Communication and Information Systems Group General Manager, Mobile Communications Equipment
Division of Kyocera Corp.
Kyocera's new IDO Digital Minimo 533G handset is designed using DSPC's latest PDC baseband chipset
and offers up to 120 minutes of continuous talk time and 250 hours in standby mode. At 59 grams (approx.
2 ounces), the 533G PDC handset is currently the lightest handset in the world. The new handset also has a
width of only 14mm (0.55 in.) at its thinnest section making it extraordinarily thin in comparison to existing
PDC handsets available.
Japanese carrier IDO Corp. has already publicly announced the availability of the new PDC handset within
its service areas. The launch of this new handset reinforces Kyocera's position as a leading wireless handset
provider.
