Bloomberg builds a bigger black box

Michael Bloomberg, CEO of his own namesake financial news and information company, remains skeptical of the Internet. But that doesn't stop him from seeing the benefits of electronic communications networks (ECNs) -- and investing in them.

Bloomberg announced today that it will be merging Tradebook, its ECN, with Investment Technology Group's (NYSE: ITG) ECN platform, yielding a larger ECN network called the Tradebook SuperECN.

The move signals that the market for ECNs -- electronic networks that online brokerages and financial institutions use to match up buyers and sellers of equities -- is heating up. Tradebook is one of the leading ECNs among institutional investors, but it has long trailed Reuters's (Nasdaq: RTRSY) Instinet, the leader in the market..."
