Sun

Sharky from Sharky Extreme has a write up on the Computex trade show on his website. There are two articles one for each day he was there.

and

Also in other news S3 sent out a press release that they would have a notebook version of the Savage 4 in .18 micron coming out in the 3rd quarter. If this happens people might finally have a decent notebook for games.

A couple of days ago ATI licensed the rights to the mips core. Want to tell us what you are going to build with it Marc?

Yes, the 16-bit color limitation is for 3D only. Running normal applications like Office suites run in 2D, which Voodoo3 or Banshee can display in 32-bit color. What about 3D-in-a-window? Not sure, but I think you can run a 32-bit color 2D desktop and have a 16-bit 3D window on it.

16-bit is 2^16 = 65536
24-bit is (2^16)*(2^8) = 16777216
32-bit is 2^32 = (2^16)*(2^16) = 4294967296!!!!
But actually, your monitor displays only 24-bit color. The other 8 bits are used for something called an alpha-channel, which is used for overlays, sort of like that little FOX logo in the lower right corner of your TV during the X-Files.

Glide vs D3D: On Voodoo cards, the Glide version will run faster and may look a little bit better than the D3D version. D3D has added a lot of stuff in the last couple of years, so the differences in newer games will probably not be that noticable; but in older games it may be quite noticeable.

Cheers,
Tim
