"The key to success in today's Net Economy is a broad set of products that deploy and scale quickly, high quality services and worldwide community of expertise to assist companies in building and growing
successful Web businesses," said Mark Tolliver, president of the Alliance. "This initiative is a milestone in terms of wide industry support for our product portfolio."

AOL Storage farm
is built using NAS with over 100 Auspex array's. The number may be much larger now. I used to work with them 2 years ago and the number had surpassed 100 at that time.

Here is some info on a major internet server farm - Geocities

"GeoCities, which has a community of more than 4 million members, has employed MTI's StorageWare storage solutions since GeoCities' inception in 1996. MTI's storage solutions support GeoCities' community-based Web site that generates more than 1.8 billion page views per month and registers more than 14,000 new members each day. The company is best known for providing its members with 11 MB of free disk space and free use of its online Web page publishing tool, GeoBuilder, to build rich and dynamic personal Web pages.

GeoCities, which pioneered the concept of the large-scale, Web-based community, operates an online service that requires maximum uptime, high- performance and flexible, scalable options for expanding storage capacity. GeoCities' MTI storage installation is configured with 350 Sun Microsystems servers running Sun's Solaris operating system and Apache Web software.

MTI StorageWare products provide storage on demand for GeoCities, allowing the company to easily add capacity to support its rapidly growing user base. GeoCities is currently installing new capacity at a rate of 100 gigabytes per week. MTI also has entered into a professional services contract to manage GeoCities' IT infrastructure, including installation and maintenance of Sun servers, backup systems and storage. The GeoCities facility, located in Santa Clara, Calif., has more than 200 MTI StorageWare systems with a total capacity of more than 10 terabytes."

I have seen MTI's GLADIATOR 6700 and it is very impressive looking, especially with its arrays of blinking likes. It looks like something you would see on the bridge of Star Trek's USS Enterprise.

"DoubleClick Selects MTI Enterprise Storage System to HELP Manage Internet Advertising Data

Storage Solution Handles More Than 8 Billion Web Ads Monthly "

"DoubleClick has selected MTI's Gladiator Enterprise 3600 RAID array system, a modular, fault-tolerant solution that employs Fibre Channel serial interconnect technology. The storage system will help support DoubleClick's Storage Area Networks (SANs) located in each of the company's 12 data centers worldwide. As an architecturally redundant storage system, the 3600 will permit DoubleClick to manage and monitor information across multi-platform environments at DoubleClick's data centers, which include 130 ad servers."

This is only the beginning. If things trend towards storing personal and business data on the internet, imagine millions of users each storing 10 GB on the net. They will need a lot of storage farms, with quick Fibre Channel connections.
