Can someone please explain "short position" and how it works exactly

Say a MM has no shares to begin with.
Somebody buys 50,000 shares, and the MM
fills the order, even though they have no shares.
They are now 50,000 shares short. Now, they must
come up with those 50,000 shares, because they have already
sold them. If someone sells 45,000 shares, then the MM's
have covered 45,000 of the 50,000, and now they are only
5,000 short.
