Lucent to Integrate VPN Gateway And IPSec Client Products With PKI Certificate Solutions From Entrust and VeriSign June 3, 1999 11:18 AM MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1999--In an effort to speed the acceptance of secure electronic commerce, Lucent Technologies LU today said that customers who buy their Lucent VPN Gateway and IPSec Client products will soon be able to choose solutions from either Entrust(R) Technologies ENTU or VeriSign(R) VRSN to centrally manage the public-key infrastructure (PKI) certificates used in conducting secure Internet transactions.
"Having an effective way to manage digital certificates is essential to any scalable virtual private network (VPN) solution," said Howard Gittleson, director of Lucent's Secure/VPN Solutions Group. "By integrating our high performance VPN Gateway with the leading certificate management capabilities of Entrust Technologies and VeriSign, we can deliver cost-effective and robust VPN solutions, while letting our customers choose their preferred PKI technology."
PKI technology manages the complete lifecycle of digital certificates, including initial issuance, usage, renewal, expiration, and revocation. Digital certificates are cryptographically generated and represent a user or computer's digital identity. Certificates can be used for secure authentication and authorization services over shared IP networks, enabling companies to provide network access to employees, partners and customers in a secure and controlled manner. They also may be used as a type of electronic business license, which demonstrates proof of an organization's on-line identity.
John Sandala, director of Network Commerce Services at AT&T Canada, commented, "At AT&T Canada, we view the adoption of Public Key Infrastructure and Certificate Authority standards to be as critical to the mass acceptance of electronic commerce as the standardization of cheques and other negotiable instruments were to paper-based commerce in the Industrial Revolution. Lucent's integration of both Entrust and VeriSign certificate management capabilities into its VPN Gateway offering is a significant and exciting step in bringing the awesome potential of electronic commerce to business people everywhere."
Under the terms of recent signed agreements, Lucent will ensure that both Entrust Technologies' certificate management software products and VeriSign's Internet trust services will work with the Lucent VPN Gateway and Lucent IPSec Client.
The Lucent IPSec Client will use X.509 certificates, issued and signed by an Entrust/PKI(tm) certificate authority or VeriSign OnSite(SM) certificate authority, to authenticate to the VPN Gateway using robust digital signature technology.
The VPN
Gateway verifies the authenticity of the IPSec Client's digital certificate, as well as the privileges of the user before allowing a secure VPN connection to be established.
Digital certificates can also be used to authenticate VPN Gateway-to-VPN Gateway connections, as well as connections to third party IPSec-compliant devices.
Digital certificates and certificate revocation lists (CRLs) are stored in an LDAP directory for easy access.
Entrust Technologies' centrally managed and scalable PKI solutions are widely recognized for their ability to manage both keys and certificates and help ensure that the cost savings made possible through VPN are maximized. The Entrust IPSec Negotiator Toolkit provides an industry-standard interface to PKIs that enables Lucent to take advantage of Entrust's flexible PKI software, which supports advanced features such as automated and transparent key management, certificate revocation checks, key backup and recovery, and cross certification. The Lucent VPN Gateway and IPSec Client will be Entrust-Ready(tm).
VeriSign's OnSite services provide a fully integrated enterprise PKI platform designed to secure intranet, extranet, and e-commerce applications. The OnSite solution is flexible and scalable to meet the needs of growing enterprises and includes a wide range of services, practices, and policies essential for ensuring the fail-safe security enterprises require. With OnSite, enterprises can quickly and easily deploy a PKI while relieving themselves of the high expense of designing, provisioning, staffing, and maintaining their own PKI backbone.
The Lucent VPN Gateway is a high performance VPN device that implements the IP Security (IPSec) and Internet Key Exchange (IKE) industry standards to support secure, interoperable LAN-to-LAN and Client-to-LAN VPN connections. The solution includes the VPN Gateway appliance with optional hardware encryption accelerator; the Lucent IPSec Client, the software that runs on the PCs of remote users who are connecting to the private network; and Lucent's Security Management Server software to administer the VPN connections and control user access. The Lucent VPN Gateway includes the full ICSA-certified firewall features of the Lucent Managed Firewall. The Lucent Security Management Server provides a common, integrated management system for Lucent's Secure/VPN Solutions, including the VPN Gateway for virtual private networking, the Lucent Managed Firewall for robust firewall protection, and Lucent RealSecure(tm) for intrusion detection.
