Merrill Lynch's decision to hold
off launching its $29.95-a-trade online channel until
December "is a big mistake," said James Punishill, an
analyst at Forrester Research. "This was a classic
Microsoft move," he says. "They see a major threat to
business model, without even having a unit in place doing
this, they announce something.
" Merrill will likely take a
huge revenue hit from the decision, he says, recalling how
Schwab lost $150 million immediately after it went web.
But it wasn't a particularly brave move, he said. ""This is
inevitable. Consumers want access to their account via
the Internet," he said. "The consumer demand to open up
access to their account via the Internet was too strong
to ignore."

Great post Rusty!!

There's one thing I'd like to point out though not as an error but an addition to what the article states:

Many corporation ARE upgrading to NetWare 5.0 just for the Y2K advances whenever possible. Some people are still using NetWare 3.x which can be (with patches) Y2K compliant. More than a few of these companies are deciding to make the move to NetWare 5.0 to send the Y2K issue behind them PLUS add IP to their networks.

Also in some cases, applications don't have Y2K patches but instead require them to purchase a point release (meaning they buy an upgrade). In many of those cases, the application requirements may force them to upgrade their server OS as well. NetWare 5.0 makes a great move for them.

I wish I had some solid numbers for this but all I can point to is my experience and what I hear around the water cooler. We've seen a drastic jump in NetWare 5.0 training needs from companies taking this approach to their network's Y2K planning.

Also, Novell has been on the Y2K bandwagon for much more than a year now going to their major accounts (clients) and handling many of the Y2K prep work through Novell Consulting. If there is a decrease in revenue from product sales, Novell Consulting and Education may make up some slack. Last year Consulting & Education revenues increased 47% and so far this year, we've outpaced that number.

ps- Novell is also developing a special course just for NDS management. At this time its known as "NDS Expert" and covers material such as NDS for NT, advanced NDS design, NDS troubleshooting and using LDAP and NDS. This course is in the works so to speak so things can change but it's an indication of just how important NDS has become to Novell's overall strategy.

How come I get a link to a Linux Open Source article and not the MacDonald?
