What's the big deal about savings? Japanese people have a lot of savings and it doesn't do them any good. Europeans have more savings than US and lower growth. The only thing that counts is that society as a whole produces enough for its aggregate needs. If you were a farmer and set aside grain for a lean year, I could understand that. But for society to stuff a wad of paper money into a mattress, what good is that ? Or to simply have a larger or smaller number on a ledger is even more meaningless.
