Today's News and Rumors

June 4 - More video chip set manufacturer's are sampling double data rate
(DDR) DRAM, which could lead to main memory use in PCsper Techweb.
Large memory manufacturers (Samsung, Micron and Hitachi) are shipping samples
of DDR DRAM to video chipset manufacturers for potential use in the new flock of
video cards coming out this Fall. As its cheaper to manufacture than Rambus
D-RDRAM, and has almost the same performance, memory manufactures are
hoping wide adoption of DDR DRAM in the graphics card market will lead to
greater use as main memory in the desktop market. < This would put DDR DRAM
in direct competition with Rambus D-RDAM. >
Please see our article, 1999 Hardware Predictions for more information on DDR
DRAM and Rambus D-RDRAM.

June 4 - Taiwan motherboard manufacturers are rallying around PC133
SDRAM standard at Computex trade show per PCWorld. Almost all
Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers are displaying motherboards with the new
Via Apollo Pro 133 chipset that allows use of PC133 SDRAM. More interesting is
the fact that the new Via chipset is made for motherboards that use Celeron and
Pentium III processors. Conspicuously absent were any motherboards using Intel
backed Rambus D-RDRAM which we will see in motherboards this Fall when Intel
releases their Camino 820 chipset. Motherboards and new computers using Via's
new chipset will also be available this Fall. Company representatives from one
Taiwanese firm stated that they expect PC133 SDRAM to out sell Rambus
D-RDRAM this year and next.
< It looks like we will have a real choice this Fall between the two types of memory.
Please see our related story below for more information on PC133 and Rambus
D-RDRAM.
