I agree, why would I buy a new computer from BIDS or another internet site when I can buy directly from DELL or Compaq and recently, Hewlett Packard??? In other words, why would I go through a middleman when I can get a better deal from the makers of such boxes???

IMO , these auction sites stand a better chance of succeeding if they liquidate merchandise purchased from old inventories or bankruptcies. That is, items which they buy in bulk from companies in difficulty and then sell them auction-style. The margins would be considerably greater than what they are getting now. And consumers would likely obtain bargains.
