The reason that some companies do not use an exact last day of the month close, is that many prefer to end their months & quarters on the same day of the week - typically Friday or Saturday.

Therefore many companies operate on fixed 13 week quarters, with the end of the quarter being the Saturday closest to the end of the quarter.

For example, companies that use this method would close the current quarter on July 3, 1999 rather than June 30th. As an investor, you should be somewhat careful with this, since once every seven years, a company gets an extra week and has a 53 week year. Can make sales growth look better than it actually was.

To the best of my knowledge, THQ always uses the last day of the month, regardless of what day of the week it is on.
