Interesting PCLN News - Major Airlines' Fare Increase Produces One Ticket Request Per Second for Priceline.com's Name-Your-Price Leisure Airline Tickets

BUSINESS WIRE - June 03, 1999 16:23
STAMFORD, Conn., Jun 3, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) -- In the wakeof Tuesday's announcement by major airlines of a 4 percent increase in advance-purchase leisure fares, priceline.com (Nasdaq: PCLN) experienced an almost immediate dramatic rise in travelers coming to its Web site to name their own price for leisure airline tickets.

Shortly after the airlines' announcement, consumers turned to priceline.com. At peak periods during Tuesday and Wednesday, customers were requesting tickets at a rate of one ticket every second from priceline.com's travel services unit. Ticket request velocity was running approximately 33 percent faster than at any other time in the company's history exceeding 20,000 ticket requests a day for the first two days following the airlines' announced fare increase.

"This immediate surge further confirms that the priceline.com business model is fully in touch with the desires of the American consumer," said Rick Braddock, priceline.com's chairman and CEO. "While this most recent activity is in response to a particular piece of news, more consumers are using priceline.com as a powerful pricing alternative across a broad range of travel, financial and automotive products. For the first time, consumers have a choice. If theycan't afford or are unwilling to pay list prices for goods and services, they can come to priceline.com and name their own price."
