I ignore the pump statements from so called longs as well. I look for constructive discussion. But it is easier to create fear and shorts take advantage of that.

I think you are right about the cheerleading being a waste of time. But even if cheering can't encourage the stock (being the inanimate thing it is), most people feel better making noise. And shorts have to, because they are against the grain (or trend for profitable companies). They are doing something that requires timing to make money, while bulls in Intel have a victorious buy and hold experience.
