Re: the Russians & the Balkans.

To be perfectly honest with you, I have not been keeping up with matters there. The whole NATO bombing business and the mess in Kosovo upset me so much that I promptly stuck my head under a pillow and I have kept it there ever since.

As a general principle, I would say there is no harm in the Russians becoming dominant players in the Balkans. All that stuff about "our Orthodox Slav brothers" is a lot of hooey, of course, especially coming from the mouths of present & former Communist Party functionaries. But on the practical political level, it seems to me the Russian influence has been constructive so far.

As for "American interests" in the Balkans -- just what ARE they?
