At the pre IPO or VC price of how much per share $3, $1, less ?

If Intel bought IVIL at $120 ps they'd be declared insane or profligate or worse.

The people who buy into the frenzy of prices escalating just to get in on the hot deal. You're right. Insane is not a good word. Unwise is better. Whatever the word, it is the opposite of rational investing.
