badon518, those are solid points and certainly observations to ponder.

And I really don't know how to answer your questions. But certainly, every investor has his/her own preference for risk and that's one of the things that makes for lively two sided markets.

The diversity of points of view on this thread is also what makes it interesting to read and there isn't a day that goes by where I wonder, "Why didn't I think of that?"

The matter of success is a relative term. And a personal one. More often than not, it is not measured by size of your positions or your account net liquidating equity, but if just for a day, we left the world a better place for having walked upon it. Random act of kindness as it were.

Others may feel differently and they're probably right too.

Best regards,

Mark A. Peterson

badon518,

>don't understand risking wealth when you're wealthy.<

Most people with wealth will only have a very small portion of their wealth in speculative positions. I sell naked calls and naked puts, but they only amount to about 20% of my total portfolio which consist of blue chips such as HD, MRK, DO, MSFT, MO, and others of the same quality.

All investments have risk so the wealthy are taking risk anytime they invest. One could also ask why some wealthy people go to work everyday also! It all boils down to making a dollar!

It's a lot more complicated than that.

There is probably no way to know the real number but their are many people on SI with seven digit and higher portfolios. People who run all or part of their own money and do their own posting. As well, their is a larger cadre that don't post on the boards - but do send personal messages.

<<< i don't understand risking wealth when you're wealthy. >>>

Start understanding it. Your statement does not compute.

What is wealthy? relative to who? Gates? or maybe a beggar in Calcutta?
