DJ Lucent Named Pfd Equip Supplier For Fiber Optic Ring

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) received an equipment supply contract
worth up to $250 million from Africa One Ltd. for a telecommunication network to be built in Africa.

In a press release Friday, Africa One said it will develop and own the undersea fiber-optic network,
which will connect more than two dozen African countries.

Pending a definitive agreement, Lucent will provide the software and telecommunications products to
the $1.6 billion project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2002.

Also, Global Crossing Ltd. (GBLX) units will be awarded project management and construction
contracts valued at more than $100 million, Africa One said.

Africa One is a cable company owned by privately held Columbia Technologies of New Jersey.
