Keep in mind that the data reported by the government is not a totally random thus if an error is made in a previous month I would expect to have over shoot in the opposite direction. Lets say the CPI was understated by .2 then the index should be adjusted to eliminate the error. With the next report one would expect the error to be substantially smaller or on negative unless some one intends to introduce a positive error.
