<Is this technology soo complicated that only the finest, smartest, and best engineers really understand it?>

It's not that. Given a little time and effort, any non-techie can learn about the general aspects of this technology if it can be explained in an easy-to-understand manner.

The problem is the Internet itself. The best thing about the Internet is also the worst thing about it, which is the fact that anyone with a computer and a little know-how can host his or her own web site and become a self-proclaimed "expert." I don't know how many times I've seen hardware sites post articles which analyze the benefits and drawbacks of a certain technology, only to base their conclusions on faulty facts.

In other words, people quickly jump to conclusions without knowing the big picture. It's an age-old problem, except that the Internet just exacerbates this problem.
