AMD's problem has been that, up until now, their chips aren't fast enough.

Exactly, that is my point. Problem is that AMD won't be able to ship many K7s for a while due to:
1. New core, better wait to see if bugs are found in field before converting the factory. Also new chip set.
2. Large die size reduces good die per wafer.
3. Well, ... This is AMD afterall.

So if everyone loves K7 but can't get enough of them then they buy Celeron instead of K6-X and AMD goes down the tubes due to lack of revenue.
