apanese electronics manufacturers Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. said on Friday they would increase production of DVD-ROM drives.
Hitachi will boost production of DVD-ROM (digital video disc read-only memory) drives to 6.5 million units per year in the business year to March 2000 in Japan and Malaysia, up from three million in 1998/99, it said. The production increase is due to rising demand in the United States. Toshiba will increase DVD-ROM drive output to six million units per year in 1999/00 in Japan and the Philippines, compared with 2.5 million in 1998/99.

The company said the increase in output was due to higher demand in Japan and the United States.
