The issuance of stock warrants by ANCR, I promise you, has not been isolated to this one OEM. It takes many months to strike a deal with an OEM. I can guarantee that this tactic has been in place with ANCR for some time now. Probably not wasted on the small fish, but offered to the big players. I'll wager there are more big announcements down the pike. Bravo ANCR. It is probably too late for BRCD to figure out what has happened and copy this creative finance. Announcements are often held until both players have made their maneuvers, and there is mutual benefit. This is not the only BIG company ANCR has signed this way. I promise.

JFieb,

I think one of the storage areas GG is high on is NAS. I am sure I asked him the question about AOL server farms after he posted on it on his thread. He did not respond to my question about the technology he was referring to. From responses here and some marketing documents, as well as some surveillance I did on national laboratories - NAS is a definite competitor for the time being. I was very glad to see a post from Tom on the AOL technology. Ancor is clearly aware of the competition and it is good that they are now working with Sun who has a solid internet focus.

I guess I don't agree completely with the statement that what FC can do "can be done by other means". Since it is both a channel and a network technology that is not true. I think only HIPPI shares this feature. Although you could say that you are only using the channel aspects off the back end of a server, that minimizes the scalability of FC compared with the only other available channel technology. If you look just at that segment, SCSI will not scale or interconnect as well and HIPPI is way too expensive and FC has the jump on them in terms of price point.

I still think there is also a potential role for FC as the only technology that can cluster disks and processors on the same network (with the advent of high bandwidth low latency cards and larger throughputs)but Intel & Co. with their switched bus is the clear future competition.

I guess I would consider disk and tape clustering a definite evolution. I would say it is important. Somebody might come up with a way to put DWDM transmissions on an FC disk. If they do, I don't think it will be competitive in a while. The driving force is low cost magnetic storage and the low throughput to the disk.
