U.S. will increase tariffs on Korean DRAM

Jun 04, 1999 - Antidumping tariffs imposed by the United States on Korean dynamic random access memory semiconductor chips will be increased under a preliminary decision by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The department has decided to impose a 13.11% tariff on Hyundai Electronics Industries?DRAM chips and a 10.67% rate on LG Semcon's DRAM. The Department will make a final decision on rates in the second half of this year.

Korean chip makers had been subject to U.S. antidumping tariffs ranging from 3.95% to 9.04% since 1998

The United States imported US$1.92 billion worth of DRAM chips from Korea last year, up from US$1.79 billion in 1997.

On June 2, 1999, the Department of Commerce announced its preliminary determination in the antidumping duty administrative review of DRAMs from the Republic of Korea.
