>>But many RAM companies (particularly in Japan), for example, would benefit if RDRam did not come out as quickly as planned. This gives them more time to get their 0.18 micron processes in shape and to prevent companies like Samsung from running away with the market. Likewise, if the rampup can be slowed down - ie the time from first systems until market share is developed - then more companies can jump in after the technology has had all the bugs worked out.<<

alan,
you really have something there. and, it is not just "japanese" companies that are behind. mu is definitely chasing samsung. ibm must also be behind on their rambus plans. i am not sure what is cause and what effect though.

some nice announcements and finds during the past 3 days while i was out.

wed. ibm announces plans to produce and use rambus drdram(so much for fud). this is the first ibm production announcement. either they are keeping a secret or they are behind. i suspect the latter. the important part of this short-term is, i bet we keep nintendo.

thur. samsung announces mass production in progress. they are on schedule. samsung also announced a new dram production facility to come on line next year. they will now match mu's projected output. this is good.
right now samsung can hold prices high because drdrams are scarce and competition is light. as more vendors come on line and production increases that will change rapidly. the price and availability fudsters will then go away.

fri. kingston announces rimm validation by intel.
found out from a yahoo poster on friday that matsushita has been awarded an hdtv + rambus patent. i still believe this could/will be a huge source of rambus rvenue.
cadence announces a rambus design tool suite.

schlumberger is opening rambus design consulting centers around the world. we do not discuss that here. it is imo an important indicator of how well rambus is penetrating a variety of markets behind the scenes.
nice three days,
unclewest

Alan,

Good point on Samsung, sounds as if they are setting themselves up to sell most of the RDRAM at a "non" commodity price.
