I think index funds are probably fine for the avg. investor- but as for equity funds- why pay a manager and pay yearly capital gains taxes on an equity fund, when you can buy stocks like SPY, DIA, QQQ, WEBS? There are no mgt. costs, and you never have to take gains if you don't want to. Only external cost is the broker fee to buy in. ($9.95 on Datek).

FWIW- If the market goes to 4K, I'll probably just buy DIA, or the QQQ. But that's a Big IF at the moment. In the meantime....
