Ray,

I agree with you that the "ASP movement" is a powerful one. One of the compelling examples of that is that I haven't made a point of looking for any info about ASPs. I came by this stuff in my casual reading of tech news.

I'd like to see the day that I will never again buy software for my home computer. I'd much prefer to rent it and let the hassles of upgrades, corrupted program files and software manipulations when changes are made to the hardware be someone else's problem. I believe that day will come.

I would buy better quality hardware if it weren't for the huge amount of time needed to change software from one computer to another. Imagine having all your program files stored on someone's server, allowing you to simply unplug one computer and plug in another one. I won't be at all surprised to see the computing devices given away for free as an incentive for people like me to rent packages of software.

Having said all that, I still don't see the power of one ASP over another being nearly as great as the power of Citrix over its wannabe competitors. ASPs will be wonderful for users of all kinds, but their low barrier to entry makes them relatively unattractive investments for me.
