Lucent received an equipment supply contract worth up to $250 million from Africa

DJ Lucent Named Pfd Equip Supplier For Fiber Optic Ring

NEW YORK -- Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) received an
equipment supply contract worth up to $250 million from Africa
One Ltd. for a telecommunication network to be built in Africa.

In a press release Friday, Africa One said it will develop and own
the undersea fiber-optic network, which will connect more than
two dozen African countries.

Pending a definitive agreement, Lucent will provide the software
and telecommunications products to the $1.6 billion project, which
is scheduled to be completed in 2002.

Also, Global Crossing Ltd. (GBLX) units will be awarded project
management and construction contracts valued at more than $100
million, Africa One said.

Africa One is a cable company owned by privately held Columbia
Technologies of New Jersey.

Great, but who's going to pay for the job.

Why do you think the Serbs are going to buy equipment from the US or any NATO country? Unless the US or NATO is paying for the rebuild, which is not all that unlikely. But I would think that the Northern European manufactures will have better chances than Lucent.

At this point, I worry more over potential Lucent contracts in China. If the political situation gets worse, Lucent may stand to loose more business than any American company.

I find their reasoning a little weak! What about Alcatel? They have a great European presence since they are a French company after all. I also wonder about the Lucent-American connection. Like someone already mentioned, Lucent could certainly rebuild their networks but who is going to write the check? Oh, I forgot! America will! Since we are the world's policemen it is our responsibility to pay for this.

I will flip out if Clinton goes to Congress with that one!

Cheers,

Steve
