In the June issue of Boardwatch mag., Streaming Media section written by Doug Mohney one finds this: "THE QUIET INVESTOR" "Ampex (www.ampex.com) the company that invented the videotape recorder, is putting a whole lot of money into Internet Video. A leader in digital video processing equipment and tape storage systems, Ampex bought a 20 percent stake in Reston, Virginia's, TV on the Web (www.tvontheweb.com) and another 20 percent of Los Angeles-based Alternative Entertainment Networks, Inc. (AENTV, at www.aentv.com), with an option to acquire a majority interest in AENTV. As part of the deal, AENTV will move into a new Ampex Internet video facility in the LA area. Ampex also has a majority stake in a private Web hosting group, making these investments more than just a "Hey we've got an Internet portfolio" exercise. Since Ampex is planning a future beyond its current tape and video products, it stands to reason it will continue to make acquisitions. With East-Coast and West-Coast investments, it also seems reasonable that a future acquisition would include one or two more production facilities in major U.S. cities and a piece of a Tier-1 provider to link it all together. Maybe Digital Broadcast Network will be the one." I make note of this not because of the news, (it's old) but because Mohney took interest. He's the sectors' new (streaming media and IB, Internet Broadcasting) futurewatcher and sage, since Jack Rickard retired as publisher of Boardwatch and disappeared....IMO. This is the first time that I'm aware of an article about Ampex in a trade mag/zine referring to the "new" direction. This could be the start of the big "push", marketing-wise. And most interesting....."Maybe Digital Broadcast Network will be the one". Another good question, I think, to ask EB. Have you talked with anyone at DBN regarding acquisition or partnership agreements ? Enjoy the rest of the day....
