"There was/is no Greek god named Abraxas; he is/was a creation of the novel."

I was afraid of this, simply because I hadn't found any other references. Oh well, I still like the concept. Maybe he should be promoted anyway. Everything has to start somewhere and I can think of poorer sources than a Hesse novel.

On Demian: If you haven't read it, find it and read it. It's a great little book. I would assume it's at least partly autobiographical, and tells the story of one "Sinclair" who seems to basically be Steppenwolf's Harry Haller as a child, and of his interactions with an older "mentor" named Demian. Anyone who was an uncomfortably aware 17 year old cynic should appreciate it.

On Dionysus:

I had heard the Dionysus/Jesus thing before, but I'm not sure where. It is compelling in some ways, but I would assume ultimately coincidental. I think that it would be safe to assume that at some point in the development of most religious traditions somebody, to quote Douglas Adams, gets "nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change."

And thanks for the google.com reference. It looks like it could be a good one. I'll have to play with it a bit and see.
