>>>>>There's a depth of emotion to the demonization of lawyers that I find baffling and repugnant.<<<<<

I agree. I wish I did understand it. I usually don't tell people I meet socially that I am a lawyer. Very few of the married couples we meet socially, say, in the neighborhood or at my children's school, have working wives and mothers. They usually just assume I am a stay-at-home mom like the rest of them. I wish I had never mentioned it on SI. It really raises peoples hackles.

Like being gay. Or a vegetarian. Or maybe a satanist. Some things are just not acceptable.

A friend and neighbour of mine is a lawyer, my lawyer in fact. On his office wall he has a print of an ~1850 French watercolour of two obviously angry and stressed-out peasant types fighting over a cow - one pulling on the horns and the other pulling on the tail ... there's a well-fed and well-dressed man seated on a stool milking the cow, on his top hat is the word 'Avocat' ..... which is french for 'lawyer'.

This guy knows more lawyer jokes than anybody i ever knew, and he's also imho the best lawyer around ... for one thing, he's moderately famous for turning down business by settling disputes with a phone call or two accurately placed. Bang for the buck, with a yuk thrown in.
