Peter,

I read the press release a few times and it is not exactly 100% clear what the new model is. I asked around briefly on Friday. Here is my current understanding.

From the press release you can see you get the development tools:

"Wind River has also pulled together six separate tools packages, each aimed at developers with differing levels of needs and experience. All packages include the core tools from the Tornado development platform with VxSim(TM)-lite, the integrated simulator. Experienced PC programmers or college students looking to update their skills by tinkering with Tornado without building a production system, can purchase the Tornado Prototyper which includes the Tornado core tools and the complete VxSim simulation tool"

You will notice that it says " without building a production system". I think for the $2995 you get just the development tools but NOT the "libraries" which are specific to a particular microprocessor type. Therefore for $2995 you get to do all the simulations you like. If you then like what you see and decide that you what to build a device you will then have to purchase the specific libraries for your particular chip. My guess is that the total cost at the end of the day is probably close to that of the old model.

I think its a bit like walking into your local supermarket and being handed a small sample of cheese or wine. You get to see it, smell it and taste it. If you like it, then you may go and buy the product.

Regards
JC.

PS. The press release makes no mention of royalties. I assume from this that they remain as before.
