Tench,
The jump from Winstone 98 to 99 gave the Intel chips about a 10% jump.
putting the cache on the die of the K6 jumped the K6-III back ahead.
The Celeron is not necessarily a superior chip to the K6-2 but for the FPU. FPU intensive programs aren't all as prevalenat as "gamer" websites like Anand and Tom might lead you to believe. For the rest of the 95% of computer users the K6-2 is a good choice.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the Celeron but the K6-2 is a fine chip.
Besides, for the masses, Mhz sells (TM McMannis) anyway.
