Mike - Belmont Summary,

Congratulations on your winner.

I guess the racing gods intervened in the triple crown again.

I thought Charismatic was very courageous in defeat. Especially considering he may have been in pain throughout the stretch drive.
He did more to impress me today than he did in the bumper car Derby or the speed duel Preakness where he ran well but had good trips. He ran real well today. I think he will be fine based on what I could see. If I was the owner though I would retire him immediately even if he can make it back. I do not think he is an especially talented horse, at least as triple crown types go. His reputation can only go down from here as he is entered against older and much faster colts. The three year olds have been running below par speed figures for the entire spring and they may have trouble against their elders if that crop stays sound. He's at his peak value right now. SELL!!!!

As is often the case I thought the Belmont told us little more than who wants to run a mile and one half. Obviously talented horses like Menifee and SilverBulletDay were nowhere to be found. Though in the filly's case it wasn't totally unexpected. I don't expect Lemon Drop Kid to move to the top of the class from here although the 2nd place finisher seems to be a comer.

I made a win bet on Lemon Drop Kid in his last race. He ran well that day despite being reasonably close to a rapid pace. He also spent some of that race bogged down on the dead rail that day. Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough to play him back today even though I thought the price was very square. Especially compared to Best of Luck who beat him last time with the much better trip.

I played Patience Game off his last tough Preakness trip at what I also thought was also a very square price considering I rated him 3rd in the race above the filly, Stephen Got Even and Best of Luck etc... He disappointed me. Perhaps he doesn't want to run that far. Then again perhaps I misjudged his last effort.

I think the pinhead management job of the year has to go to Bob Baffert. He came into the Derby with the two best fillies in the country by far (really good ones too) and perhaps the two best colts. He left without an in the money triple crown check. It wouldn't be so bad except his colts did nothing wrong in the Derby except get horrible trips. Maybe they weren't as good as they looked coming in, but we don't know that yet based on the Derby. At least one of them deserved another shot unless they were injured and I have not heard that they were. He wasted two races with Excellent Meeting who came away with nothing and is now hurt when she could have been earning money elsewhere. He chose to enter SilverBulletDay in a mile and one half race against colts for the first time where she got buried. It is not impossible that after this defeat she will not be the same for a long time (if ever). I've seen tons of good horses never come back from this sort tough effort and defeat. In any event I think he made a number of questionable decisions with a barn full of tigers and has little to show for it. Maybe Prime Timber and General Challenge will come back in the fall fresh, fit, and able.

Wayne

Mike - The last I heard was that Charismatic would be ok but might not race again. Will probably make merry with the equine damsels now - the ideal situation, make merry without the marry. But you know about THAT, right? I lost all my exactas but came out ahead on the race. Bet V&V win and place. I was stunned to see him open and hold at 55-1. Ralph
