Oh, there is certainly no problem doing the portability through proxies, and translation within directory services, that wasn't my point. It is even easier than the kludgy means the POTS folks use.

My point had more to do with the branding issues associated with the address itself, and the means by which one identifies with a provider, or providers (plural) in this case. In Eric's case, where he's had multiple address changes, he'd eventually wind up with something like:

eric@AOL.com@MSPG@com.@home.com@covad.com

Who's on first? At best, it would show to whomever received his mail that he couldn't make a commitment. It would begin to sound like an Abbott and Costello skit.
