Melinda, what your boss is probably into is New-Age mumbo-jumbo, to which New Agers have misappropriated the term "Metaphysics." (There was an SI thread once, called "Metaphysics and Spiritual Practices", which well illustrated the confusion.)

Metaphysics is that branch of philosophy that investigates first principles and the nature of ultimate reality; it includes within it the study of "Being" (ontology). In modern times, it has lost some of its traditional territory (meta-physics means beyond-physics) to science; and some philosophers nowadays dismiss many of its problems as purely "semantic."

You can see how metaphysics, as properly defined, can interact with/conflict with religion, which also seeks to interpret ultimate reality. But it is generally pretty tough stuff, and I would guess that metaphysics, as such, has very little influence on contemporary forms of "spirituality."
